Who was St Valentine.

There are a number of different St Valentines recorded in history. All of them were martyred.

Two are said to be responsible for the romance of the day.

In the 3rd Century during the reign of Claudius II a young priest defied the Emperors edict. No men were to marry at any cost. The men were made for war not romance. This St Valentine performed secret wedding services for young lovers. He was caught and executed.

A more murky tale is of a St Valentine who whilst imprisoned fell in love with a young girl who was the jailers daughter and wrote a letter addressed and signed “From your Valentine” a term that we still use today.

Back to Romance.

The table is set, the champagne bubbles are flowing in the glass, a delicious sea food platter adorns the table.

Customer service why it is so important

Customer service why it is so important. 2018 has been a tough year for all the retail sector so lets look forward into 2019 with a positive attitude.

People like to feel happy and enjoy shopping and it is our job as retailers to ensure it happens and to go the extra mile.

There are a number of ways we can do this but the most important factor that we feel will keep our customers happy is good customer service.

Judith and I are always delighted when we open an email from a customer and it has praise for our customer service.

We are also human and when the email has a complaint it upsets us.

We are so passionate about customer service that we intend to write a number of articles with our personal experiences good and bad and how we are constantly working to improve it. Here is the first.

How to turn a complaint into praise.

The customer has come to you in the first place for a reason, so identify that reason. What was it?

The product
The price
A recommendation
Previous purchases
Good customer service
Quality of product

Ask the customer the question and then put the problem right.

What should we do to put the problem right?

Identification of a problem from a complaint can save your reputation.

For example we offer a free shipping option over £35 on eyeeyedesign and on our sister website Funkyreaders.

A customer who had not used us before rang and left a message. She was complaining that she was not getting her free shipping option. We rang her back and told her that we would investigate this.

She was happy to buy the products over the phone and received her free shipping.

That call revealed a logarithm problem on certain products. When they were bought together they took it unbeknown to us just under £35. We found a problem that we did not know existed and solved it.

Had we not returned the call the problem would still be there.

So a big thank you to that customer!

Reading Glasses have become part of modern day life. There are essentially 3 types.

Men`s reading glasses.
Women`s reading glasses.
Unisex reading glasses.

Are they necessary read more ….

The middle ages

The monks in the middle ages were among the first to wear glasses.

They were not the fashionable specs of today. Theirs were round and made of metal which they perched on their noses.

The monks needed them for their laborious work writing lengthy manuscripts by candle light.

Many famous figures throughout history have worn them. Napoleon Bonaparte wore them at the battle of Waterloo.

Do they help?

As people grow older their near vision can deteriorate and reading newspapers or documents can become difficult especially in poor light.

People are amazed at the difference that a magnification can make to their reading experience.

Strengths of magnification

The strengths of magnification for reading are a +, whilst for distance they are a -.

For reading the standard magnification begins with a +1 and will increase by .25 and then .50 and then +2 etc.

An optician will be able to test a persons eyesight and prescribe the magnification needed for reading (+) and for distance (-).

Lenses.

The lenses are important. Buying cheap reading glasses can be a bad idea. The curvature of some lenses in the cheaper version can give a bad reading experience and strain the eye.

The more reliable lenses are called Aspheric. These lenses will be flatter and will give a more even reading experience.

Frames

The frames for glasses tend to be mass produced in the far east and are made from poly carbonate or from acetate which is a form of plastic.

Size and shape

It is important when choosing your reading glasses that you get the size and shape right for you face.

You will often see on the arms mysterious numbers and wonder what they mean. An example might be 140 x 40 x 140.

Usually the first number will be the length of the frame, so in our example it would be 140 millimetres.

The second number will be the depth of the lenses so that that would be 40 millimetres.

The last number is the length of the temple. By that we mean the length of the arm, so 140 millimetres.

You might also see the letters PD. These relate to pupil distance.

Can a necessity ever be a luxury

How Eye Eye Design started and became an izipizi uk stockist

In 2013 whilst on holiday in Siena browsing the many fabulous shops and boutiques in this medieval city Judith spotted a pair of velvet reading glasses.

Lunch on the square

Over a lovely lunch we decided that we would set up a reading glasses company in the UK . Our first step was to track down the supplier of the reading glasses.

Tracking down the supplier

On the frame of the velvet reading glasses was the brand name. We traced the supplier to Milan and made an appointment to go and see them.

At the meeting we bought our first batch of reading glasses.

Seeking new brands we travelled to visit the European trade shows and now we are an official IZIPIZI UK stockist.

Macef 2013

Macef 2013 was a gift trade fair in Milan. We had gone to the show looking for inspiration and had trawled the show all day and found nothing.

Having gone back into the centre of Milan we spotted a brand called Baci in a shop in The Galleria. That brand had been at Macef .

On our return to Macef we spotted a small stand with a display of colourful reading glasses called See Concept.

The brand IZIPIZI originated as See Concept. It had 3 shapes and 6 colours.

After a discussion with the representative we purchased our first order.

Customers can now buy this product on our website. Our next step was to sell at shows throughout the UK

We like to think that we were an important part of the growth of the brand in the UK. In 2015 we set up a separate website eyeeyedesign.com to stock the full range.

History of Reading Glasses

The first reading glasses were invented by a monk called Salvino degli Armati in the middle ages.

These were rivet spectacles and must have been purgatory to wear.

The monks spent many hours a day writing and reading lengthy manuscripts, much like our modern day computer users.

The first sunglasses go back to the prehistoric times.

It is said that an Eskimo blinded by the sun`s reflection on the ice carved an aperture in a piece of bone and strapped it over his eyes.

Fashion reading glasses did not truly come to the fore until the 1960s.

“Fashion eye wear”was largely undefined and its creators could and would try anything.

In this era optical companies threw caution to the wind and designed amazing pieces.

Mass market brands such as Foster Grant, Opti-Ray and Samco set the tone for fashion reading glasses.

The market grew bigger than ever.

Foster Grant retained the Geer DuBois advertising agency to devise a campaign.

Ad Age magazine would cite this as one of the best of the 20th Century.

The ads featured popular celebrities such as Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Julie Christie, Raquel Welch and others.

Moving forward into the early 2000’s off the shelf reading glasses became uninteresting affairs especially in the United Kingdom.

Where we began

In 2013 My wife Judith and I were on holiday in Siena in Italy and Judith purchased a pair of velvet fashion reading glasses.

No one was selling fashion reading glasses like these in the United Kingdom.

Our next task was to trace the supplier in Milan and to start a fashion reading glasses company.

Sunnyreaders Ltd was formed later that year.

We established our 2 websites Funkyreaders.co.uk and eyeeyedesign.com.

Our brands of fashion reading glasses are now sold across the world.
